Then you start entertaining such a terrible thought...life is so very short

I know when I overreact to things. Sometimes I feel like talking endlessly about things that just aren't that important. The oddest things inspire me to rant. I'm going to do this now, in regard to a comment that probably no one's paid much attention to but me.

In the recent Rolling Stone interview with Elvis Costello, this was said...
"...'And I have no concern for posterity. I believe when you're gone, you're gone.' You have no interest in the legacy you'll leave behind? 'No. The only reason I would is if there is anybody here I want to take care of, who would earn some money from it. In terms of reputation, who cares? I won't be here.' If you're not worried about posterity, who are you making records for? 'Anyone who will listen.' "

I know this could be taken as a perfectly reasonable thing to say, which it is, actually. But it does bug me that he doesn't seem to care to realise the importance of what he's spent his life doing. First of all, he is going to be remembered whether that's important to him or not. He's going to have a "legacy" whether he wants to or not. He doesn't have to carry on with his career with the intent of building up something memorable, but it does mean something to other people. People want him to be remembered.

"When you're gone, you're gone" is, to put this delicately, a load of crap. A person may be physically gone, but if they've made any kind of impact then being completely "gone" in any sense of that word is just not going to happen.

I don't know why this bothers me. Probably because I haven't weaned myself from more sentimental people and their interviews. Maybe because I want to shy away from the idea of life being so short. Maybe I'm not even qualified to be so cruel about one little innocuous comment that someone made--someone who I won't have even had an interest in for a full year until the end of this October. If I didn't expect him to be cynical and/or pessimistic, I wouldn't even know who he was.

But, all right--he does it for "anyone who will listen." This is something I agree with. But people will still be listening long after he's "gone." I'm sure he appreciates the "legacies," musical or otherwise, of people who've come before.

But the people who are listening right now? Well, that's us, hun, and we love you. Get over it. You will never be "gone." People will be listening and remembering forever. Your legacy is already built and you really should realise that and appreciate what you've done, done for posterity or not. Because if you don't, you're just downgrading yourself. And that's ridiculous.

    a late Monday Madness
You know... I miss the days when my posts actually sounded intelligent.
    Oh well.

    Name THREE of your........

    1. Pet Peeves: Gnats flying in my face while I type.
Cats jumping on the keyboard while I type.
The Moody Blues having a big bash for re-opening their record store in England, another place I can't go.

    2. Favorite Sounds: Justin Hayward's voice.
    12-string guitars.
Umm...I can't decide between Elvis Costello's voice and Johnny Depp's speaking voice. Ok then, forget the guitars.

    3. Desk Items: Coffee mug filled with pens.
    A Beanie Baby cat.
    A Tom Petty CD.

    4. Biggest Fears: Tight spaces.
Having worse eyesight than I already do.
    Bugs with stingers.

    5. Biggest Challenges: Putting up with best friend who now teases me 24/7 and says that she is "preparing my wedding to Elvis Costello".
Putting up with plumbers drilling holes in my walls behind Edward Scissorhands.
Putting up with The Moody Blues doing fan gatherings in foreign countries.

    6. Newest 'Toys': The Delivery Man.
Japanese release of The Delivery Man...haven't received it yet.
Two more posters to make my house a cluttered eyesore...though the posters themselves are nice.

    7. Most Used Words: Shoot.
    Great (sarcastically).
    Stop.

    8. Most Mispelled Words: necessary...neccessary? Which is it?
I don't actually have any more than that, I think.

    9. Favorite Disney Characters: Pirates of the Caribbean was a Disney movie right? So...Jack Sparrow. Jack Sparrow. And Jack Sparrow.

    10. Bookmarks on Your Homepage: Depp Impact.
    Justin Hayward.com.
Diary of a Music Whore. :)

    Random thoughts...
Well, not so random... I've been listening to The Delivery Man nonstop for a day and a half, so basically all my thoughts involve that. I guess there's no way around it: "Monkey to Man" has to be my fav song from it. And...it ROCKS when it's live.

I'm a little annoyed by "There's a Story in your Voice", because it's The Song I Would Have Loved. A friend of mine who actually likes Lucinda Williams says her voice isn't usually that "cartoony," but that doesn't really do me much good. Her voice kind of...well...ruins a song I could tell I would have really liked. (Okay...getting this out of my system: She sounds like she's trying to do a drunk imitation of Elvis Costello in pain!) Emmylou Harris is miles above her (sorry, I sound mean) although I know I would enjoy hearing Elvis sing "Heart Shaped Bruise" all by himself.

More album thoughts that only about 3 people in the whole world will care about: I also love "The Judgement," "The Delivery Man" and "Bedlam."

I saw Elvis on Conan O'Brien on friday-- the highlight of my week. (And he had monkey cufflinks...tee hee.) I had a headache at the time so I was just lying around waiting for the musical portion at the end of the show and...Elvis walks on with a silver collar thing (WTF?!) to do their "In the Future" skit, giving me a veritable heart attack. And, FYI, laughing with a headache isn't fun and is probably not healthy.

Yeah...this was a pointless post. But I don't really care.

    And that is why.

    Okay...so I bought this

at Walmart because I decided I couldn't wait for CD Universe to ship it. And for good measure I bought their only copy of Il Sogno, too... I'm a little ticked off that when I got all the plastic off of The Delivery Man and opened it, the case just broke. Ah, the mark of quality!
Anyway, the CD is making me happy and so is the fact that Elvis is going to be on Letterman tonight, and I need happiness a lot now since a plumber came over to drill holes in my walls to get to the pipes, forcing me to rearrange my bookshelves and take my Edward Scissorhands poster down so he can take a chunk out of the wall.

I was totally shocked at myself on Monday--I thought Sean Penn was funny. And anyone reading this probably knows I actively dislike Sean Penn. But if he's playing off Elvis Costello, he is actually quite humorous. This was when they guest-starred on that "Two and a Half Men" show...probably not a great show in itself, but this episode was certainly fun. And Elvis really needs to be in a movie or something, I tell you! He has great comic timing. (And Penn putting his head on Elvis's shoulder...I even died laughing at that.)

Now if you'll excuse me I'm going to watch Ed Wood...for the fifth time.

    Yo ho yo ho
Apparently yesterday was Talk Like a Pirate Day. I didn't know this, so now I have to make up for it.
My response to this picture is

Arrrr.... (I mean this in a good way)

Oh wow...I'm locking you in the brig, matey! (Actually, would a bit of handcuffing to the bed do, instead?)

    To pirates everywhere...

    I salute you!

    Special Delivery
I don't have to be upset anymore that all my friends and family...(ok, just two people, really)...have heard Elvis Costello's new song "Monkey to Man" 'cos now I have the video! Ha! Actually, my mother scared me today by saying "I've heard Elvis twice on the radio today...I hope he hasn't died or something." I shouldn't have been so shocked. But it didn't occur to me for several seconds that radio stations would already have his new album The Delivery Man!! Sigh...and I'll have to wait a whole week. (For the...erm...real thing, that is....)

    Ok...meme time again...this was fun

    Oz...revisited
I finally felt like facing my pictures. Some really lovely ones are too blurry to salvage--my photo edit program isn't good enough. SIGH

This looks kind of sad, but considering my seat was in the nosebleed section of the nosebleed section, I think I did pretty well.

Here are the full versions...the background was rather nice.

I'll see if I can save any more but I don't really have the resources. Poor Hugh.

    Unconcious mutterings
    I say ... and you think ... ?
    1. GAME BOY:: In the corner. (I've actually got one in here. "Almost Blue" is buried under it...oops)
    2. Biopsy:: ick
    3. Attack:: of the killer tomatoes... (terrible song)
    4. Convention:: Republican convention...Bush... ick
    5. Impostor:: Elvis Costello
    6. Doug:: some annoying kids' show
    7. Oscillate:: Ray Thomas's description of a note on his flute

My computer's speakers have stopped working, by the way. The internet itself stopped working for an entire day earlier this week. I'm ticked off at technology.

I wish "Finding Neverland" would be released already. They'll probably push it back till Xmas next. At least I also get to look forward to Elvis's new albums...and his performance on Conan O'Brien. Yay!!!

I love Conan; when I took a tour of the NBC studios in NY, my travelling companion forced me into doing this thing where you get filmed reading some lines, and on the video tape they give you it has you on Conan's "desk ride". That was not my most dignified moment. Ah well...
