Top Five on Friday
It's belated, but here's a meme provided by Music Memoirs.
Top Five "Fall" songs: (I think I'll go with songs with "fall" in the title.)
Elvis Costello - After the Fall
The Moody Blues - Had to Fall in Love
Tom Petty - Free Falling
Duran Duran - Falling Angel
The Monkees - The Day We Fall in Love
(But if I'd chosen a fall/autumn theme, I could have done Justin Hayward's "Forever Autumn"... hmm...)

Paulie, 9/20/05
Time for me to babble endlessly about a fantastic concert!
The entire day in the hotel, I was complaining because the show coincided with a TV benefit concert for the hurricane, which Elvis Costello was going to be in. I don't know how I could have been that upset about missing EC on TV when I was about to see Paul McCartney in person, but that's the kind of nutter I am.
Anyway, the only low point of the night came near the beginning: a 45 minute wait in line at the merchandise table, with everyone smushed together and barely moving. (Didn't help that there was a perv directly behind me.) The end result was a couple of t-shirts and a program, which set me back about a hundred bucks. By the time I'd bought everything, it was almost eight already, but I didn't have to worry about missing anything--the opening act was a DJ who remixed Paul songs. Not exactly quality entertainment, but a bit less annoying than Cirque de Soleil, who opened for him 3 years ago.
I was too distracted by my seats to care about the DJ. I was about 20 rows back, but dead center, and with bincoulars I could make out the details in Paul's face, if the huge heads in front of me moved enough. I couldn't believe I had floor seats after the disastrous seats last time. If I'd really tried, I think I could have sneaked in a camera, but I didn't and at least that let me relax and enjoy the show without worrying about pics. But I wish I could've gotten a shot of him, because he was so cute now that his hair's grown out a little, unlike this picture from the last tour in 2002:
That is admittedly a nice photo, short hair or not. Some high points were: Eleanor Rigby, I Will (which he apparently hadn't done in a while), Band On the Run, Blackbird, Please Please Me, Penny Lane, I'll Get You, and the even more obvious ones like Hey Jude. I also vividly recall Live & Let Die, because of the jets of flame onstage, and as far away as I was I could feel the blast of heat. Not to mention the noise they caused. Someone had been holding up a baby, which Paul had pointed out earlier (cute comments like "Hello baby!" and "Put that child to bed"), and after that particular song Paul was holding his own ears and wondered what the baby thought of the noise. (Wow, look at how detailed I'm being.) Anyway, of the new songs, he did Fine Line, Jenny Wren, and English Tea (which is getting lukewarm reviews, but I happen to like it). The show was about 2 1/2 hours long, and by the last encore he was losing his voice. Not to mention getting the line backwards of The End, saying "The love you make is equal to the love you take," which amused me greatly. When it was all over, as if that wasn't enough for me, I started sneaking around outside the huge Philips Arena until I found his equipment trucks and watched his crew loading boxes (all of this was to no avail, BTW, but it was amusing.) A truck had this picture on the side, and the longer I looked, the more it resembled My Aim Is True:
I know, I'm a nutter. There was also some kind of Lexus hybrid parked out there with a huge pic of his Hofner bass on the side. I knew Paul probably wouldn't come out in such an obvious place, which he didn't, but I hung around anyway and started talking to a few people, and ended up waiting for about 2 hours for Paul, who was probably halfway to Philadelphia by then. Yes, there's a Fine Line between fandom and obsession. And now I'm back, far from Atlanta and Paul, exhausted from all of this (and from staying up late last night to watch a 5-second interview with Elvis on the news about the Benefit Concert). Needless to say, I'm having a mini-obsession with Paul right now. And I know I'll retain far more memories of this experience than I did of the last one, because this time I actually saw him close-up! (Well, relatively close-up.) Squee...

The Big Macca
Well, I leave tomorrow to see
I feel very lucky to be able to do this a second time. This time I actually have some halfway decent seats, as opposed to before, when I had almost the worst seats available in the gigantic arena. I won't try to get pictures though, since the security was like an airport's, and I doubt it's any better now. This is going to be the same venue, which is six hours and two states away. I have packed lots of CDs for the trip, and I know I'll be listening to "The McCartney/MacManus Collaboration" in particular. And my only Beatles shirt, I just realized, is far too big for me, so I might have to wear EC to the show too, oddly enough. There are very few people I'd do this for, but I think it's reasonable for Paul to be one of them, don't you?

Top Five on Friday
This looks like a fun one from Music Memoirs. :)
"Top Five Questioning Songs"
The Moody Blues - Question (that was obvious, but good)
Elvis Costello - Honey Are You Straight or Are You Blind? (Hmm, that's an odd question)
The Monkees - What Am I Doin' Hangin' 'Round
Culture Club - Do You Really Want to Hurt Me
The Beatles - Do You Want to Know a Secret
Honorable Mention... because I thought of another. Herman's Hermits - Can't You Hear My Heartbeat
Well...at least a couple of those are interesting, mostly because I stopped myself from using the many Moodies songs that came to me. They're a questioning bunch.

Take Me Back Tuesday
Ok. A Music Memoirs meme coming right up.
1. Name your top three anti-love songs: I'm Not in Love I'll Never Fall in Love Again Not Your Stepping Stone
2. Name your three favorite artists known for creating these gems. (I'll assume that means for the songs listed above) 10cc Elvis Costello/Burt Bacharach The Monkees (kind of an odd choice for an anti-love song, but...)
3. Name three albums with love or hate in the title. Love Stinks - J Geils Band (probably should've used that for a song, too) Axis: Bold as Love - Jimi Hendrix Viva Hate - Morrissey
~Maybe I'm too preoccupied... I really want this big overpriced box set called "Costello and Nieve"...and I don't think I can stop myself from buying it because I really and truly desire it... ARGH

Random Thoughts...
~David Bowie should sing Elvis Costello's "It's Time." I definitely think he should.
~I wonder when I'll get around to burning the 3 live shows that I recently downloaded?
~But more importantly (yes, even more important than my Elvis/Bowie thing)... I get to do something wonderful next month, and for once it didn't cause me any stress...yet... (this is the upside of having family members who are bigger fans than you are)...
Because I get to see in Atlanta!
I didn't think I would, never even thought I'd be lucky enough to see him once let alone two times, but I'm so grateful that I'm actually getting to go... I finally have something to look forward to again, because there really wasn't anything positive in sight for a while...
Anyway...! Please pardon my SQUEE

Top Five on Friday
Music Memoirs asks for the Top Five Protest Songs this time. I'm afraid my answers will be similar to last week's!
Elvis Costello - The Scarlet Tide
The Moody Blues - Question
The Beatles - Revolution
John Lennon & the Plastic Ono Band - Give Peace a Chance
Elvis Costello - Tramp the Dirt Down ...or maybe Bedlam, that has more to do with the current situation!

Watch "The Young Ones", 80's BBC show, and wish they'd made more than 12 episodes.
Drool over wonderful King of America cover.
Kidnap Elvis AND Justin Lodgey AND Paul to preserve sanity and ward off post-concert depression.
Pretty much try to stay in a constant state of confusion (like Johnny Depp) just because of the expression it leaves on my face.
Protest War
(feeling a little ambitious, are we?)
