I want to see...
House
I've only recently started to catch the reruns. I have no idea when this show actually comes on, but I hope it's soon. I saw the last episode of last season when it was first aired, and I really want to know how that cliffhanger turns out.
I also want to see
Craig Ferguson. I have no idea what this photo is about but it makes me giggle.
(Who, by the way, read my email on the show...)
Why does he have to be on vacation for two weeks? GRR I'll have to tape Conan instead, until he returns.

Music Memes
I only have enough computer time to quickly post these answers, so here goes... Take Me Back Tuesday , because it was posted today which means I won't be late in sharing my answers!
Do you buy just released CDs in the store or preorder them online? I'll preorder a CD online if it's by one of my favorite artists. There is one good music store, plus Walmart, where I live. If you really want a CD, don't take the chance of going to a store.
Do you remember a particular CD that was extremely hard to find when it had been recently released? Like Andrea said, probably The Moody Blues's December.
To what extent will you go to buy a CD that you just have to have? If I just have to have it, I'll probably go to any lengths necessary. I've bought at least one CD from a site that was entirely in French, where I had to guess at the check-out instructions. I also ordered a CD from a Japanese site since I wanted some bonus tracks only available in Japan. And if I want an out-of-print album, I've been known to pay too much on eBay and the like.
Have you ever bought a CD on a whim, without knowing the artist, just because you found something pleasing about the album art or that you've only heard one track. Did you end up discovering a new artist, or did the CD find it's way into a Used CD store or the back of your closet? Years ago I bought a random Irish CD after hearing the sample track in the store... The fact that I don't recall the performers probably says something about it. I also bought the album by the Kaiser Chiefs after hearing them do one track on a talk show, and that CD was great. It somehow has an 80s feel.
Have you ever purchased a download just because you couldn't find a song any other way? Absolutely. Like I said, if I have to have a song, I'll do almost anything to find it. I've also done this with various artists when I only want one song and don't want to buy the whole album. But probably the stupidest thing I've ever bought was the so-called explicit version of Burt Bacharach's "Who Are These People," so I could find out just what Elvis Costello was singing that could be so "explicit."
. . .
PS: Have I mentioned that Craig Ferguson read my email?? :D That still makes me smile.

Happy Birthday Elvis Costello
I just can't help myself. Listening to Brutal Youth really puts me in an Elvis kind of mood. I was also looking in my picture folders on the computer and saw that the oldest EC pics I have were saved on his birthday a few years ago.
That same year a radio station was playing his music. Last year, nothing. This year, nothing was going on either so on a whim I emailed the station requesting "Monkey to Man," mentioning it was his birthday. Not five minutes later they played it, saying it was his birthday and adding some little facts about him. The DJ also sent a reply thanking me for the reminder. (Later they played "Wonder Woman," coincidentally my favorite track on The River in Reverse, but I missed it.)
Yes, I'm on a roll. First Craig Ferguson answers my question, then I get Elvis played on the radio for his b-day (just a local station, but you know). :D (Yeah, right. As if the two were actually related.)
Because he's adorable and because apparently the "obsession" started on his birthday and because "20% Amnesia" has been in my head all day, here's wishing him a very happy birthday.

Have you ever had a day...
that's just awful for the first half, but then slightly improves?
The day was full of--to sum up--doing boring things that I hate. As if that wasn't enough, I ended up with a few other problems. First, a bee somehow went down my shirt. I discovered this in a public place ("Why is my shirt vibrating?") and probably made a big scene as I tried to shake it out, as I hate insects and am slightly afraid of ones that sting. It was an utterly huge bumblebee.
Then while passing an old family house that was recently sold, I noticed that the entire front has been torn down by the new owners. I didn't expect that to feel so strange, but I used to spend quite a bit of time there. Seeing it like that was disturbing... Feels a bit like you've lost someone. That might sound odd, I don't know.
Talking to a friend helped a little but what actually cheered me up was...
This show is on past my bedtime, and that's probably the case for a lot of people! But I occasionally tape it, or Conan O'Brien. Last week whilst wasting time on the internet I found Craig's site where you can email the show. I've seen him answer silly questions on the air before, so I decided to send one.
I taped last night's show and while watching it this evening, I was surprised and overly gleeful to see that he answered my question. On the air.
Yes, I'm shallow and pathetic. But it's the little things in life that make me SQUEE
Things like Craig Ferguson saying my name.
Or John Lodge or Elvis Costello saying it (oh, I wasn't supposed to mention EC....)

I've been listening to this album over the weekend. I'm not sure why I decided to do that.
Last week wasn't much fun, with the second dentist visit this month. Since I have a fear (and loathing) of the dentist and needles, it completely ruins my day to go... Plus the whole day before... So I had to have some fillings redone and I have to go back next week for more. Not to mention a hundred other things I have to do that I can't seem to get around to. I feel like singing "This is Hell...."
So I suppose I put on "Brutal Youth" to cheer me up. Elvis's birthday is on Friday, so it's nice to be in an Elvis-y kind of mood.
Listening to it reminded me of why I call this my favorite CD. Why this album and this type of music make up my favorite Elvis.
I have a confession. I do want another "Brutal Youth." Or "All This Useless Beauty" for that matter. Does he have to be miserable (the case with ATUB) or at least in a state of tension (the case with the Attractions on BY) to make this kind of music? Did he have to be going through difficult times to make "When I Was Cruel"? Because it certainly looks that way.
Now, I loved "The Delivery Man," maybe because I met him on that tour. And "The River in Reverse" was all right, with a few stand-out songs. But now that I'm not preparing to go see him in concert like I was in July, and the TRIR tour is over, I can't pretend that that is my favorite version of Elvis anymore.
I miss being completely obsessed with Elvis. I've gone through most of his records and as hard as you try, you can't relive the experience of hearing "Blood & Chocolate" for the first time. I don't even have any more friends that are obsessed with Elvis, not that I had more than 3 to begin with--some of them lost contact with me, some of them lost interest in him. I miss that too. I can't hope for new material because I doubt he'll release another album like these, let alone any album, any time soon.
Music is always an important thing to me as are the artists who make it, and I hate feeling this way. I had so much fun discovering Elvis. Though ranting about this is probably worse.
***Rant ended***

Top 5 on Friday
"Welcome back my cheeky little monkeys...." I'm too easily amused by The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson.
But that has nothing to do with this post. This week at Music Memoirs it's: Top 5 songs to help you vent your frustrations :
Elvis Costello - My Little Blue Window (if I was doing a Random 10 right now this would also go on it. In my head I keep hearing the lines "But if I avert your gaze/ And I should become a shrinking flower/ Just punch me on the arm...") The Beatles - Help
The Pogues - The Turkish Song of the Damned (singing along with this seems to help)
The Damned - Neat Neat Neat
Squeeze - If I Didn't Love You

Little Boxes
Funny that this week's Top 5 on Friday from Music Memoirs is: Top 5 songs that you liked as a child that you still like now.
I was just thinking about a song that's the complete opposite of that. When I was younger a song I hated was "Little Boxes" by Malvina Reynolds, though when I heard it it was done by a man... I can't remember his name.
It was annoying and I thought it sounded silly.
Then a week ago I find out that Elvis Costello recorded it for the TV show "Weeds." Now I have an mp3 of this recording. I didn't know what to expect because I have always hated that song. But I also tend to like any sound that comes from the throat of Elvis.
Ok. So I liked the mp3. The line about "ticky tacky" still gets under my skin, but overall I like it. Probably because it sounds more like Elvis to me than The River in Reverse did.
If anyone else sang that, unless it was Justin Hayward, I'd probably still hate it.
~While I'm on the subject, here are my Top 5 answers. Top 5 songs that you liked as a child that you still like now:
Herman's Hermits - No Milk Today (Not only do I love it, but now it brings back many memories. Most of which oddly enough have to do with a plastic pool.)
The Beatles - Hold Me Tight (Possibly the first favorite song I ever had.)
Madness - Our House
The Beach Boys - I Get Around (or a dozen more. I used to listen to them quite a lot)
Ricky Nelson - Hello Mary Lou
There are quite a few more 80s songs I could have mentioned.

Two Memes
Both late, but I finally have a moment to do them, so why not?
Random 10 from Music Memoirs 10 songs that sum up your weekend or were on your playlist:
Kirsty MacColl - In These Shoes Shane MacGowan - Church of the Holy Spook The Clash - London Calling (saw the video on VH1 Classic) Robert Palmer - Addicted to Love (on the radio) Janis Joplin - Me & Bobby McGee (radio) The Beatles - Magical Mystery Tour (listened to most of this album) The Beatles - Fool on the Hill The Beatles - Hello Goodbye The Beatles - Penny Lane The Beatles - Baby You're a Rich Man *** Also from the Memoirs: Take Me Back Tuesday: What music is most likely to put you to sleep? Justin Hayward's "Moving Mountains" has done that, which is weird, because I do like the album. Other than that, mostly instrumentals would put me to sleep.
Name a few sleep related songs. The Beatles - I'm Only Sleeping The Monkees - Pillow Time Elvis Costello - I Dreamed Of My Old Lover Last Night
If one famous musician could sing you to sleep, who would it be? And what song would he/she be singing? Elvis Costello. This is Andrea's fault because of her great mix CD "Sing Me to Sleep Elvis." He could sing me any song from that.
What songs could produce nightmares if you listen to them before bed? "Peek-a-boo" by Devo probably would. The video, with demonic clowns, is enough to give me nightmares for a week.

Top Five on Friday
Today the ladies at Music Memoirs ask for: Top 5 Debut albums and the most memorable song off of each of the albums.
My answers will be predictable, but I'm going with some of the artists I know best.
Elvis Costello - My Aim is True - (The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes
The Pogues - Red Roses for Me - Streams of Whiskey
The Moody Blues - Days of Future Passed - Tuesday Afternoon
The Monkees - The Monkees - Last Train to Clarksville
The Clash - The Clash - London's Burning
I seem to have unintentionally picked the single from each album.

Long Summer Days
The summer feels like it's going by too fast. I can't believe I've been to NY and back, and my plans to post more concert photos seem to have gotten derailed.
~I got a new phone, a sort of birthday present to myself. Unlike my old one, it doesn't weigh ten pounds and it's capable of getting ring tones. So now when anyone calls (not that that happens often), I am serenaded by Elvis Costello singing "Wonder Woman."
~The heat is terrible, of course. The ants love it, and they're all over the house, but the heat only demobilizes me and keeps me from sleeping at night.
(And when I do finally sleep, I have the most bizarre and fitful dreams, involving ants swarming everywhere, with me and Jack Sparrow driving a bus up a gravel road to escape. Seeing Pirates 2 probably inspired that one as well.)
~I'm reminded of a Kirsty MacColl song, "Dancing in Limbo." (Sometimes I'm tempted to upload songs when I mention them like this, but probably no one would care, so I won't.) It perfectly conjures the feeling of a long, hot summer day:
When it's too hot for anything It's too hot to sleep Your mind runs down to where The river runs deep, and the
Time goes Summertime slow And the world stops turning And they're dancing in limbo

Watch "The Young Ones", 80's BBC show, and wish they'd made more than 12 episodes.
Drool over wonderful King of America cover.
Kidnap Elvis AND Justin Lodgey AND Paul to preserve sanity and ward off post-concert depression.
Pretty much try to stay in a constant state of confusion (like Johnny Depp) just because of the expression it leaves on my face.
Protest War
(feeling a little ambitious, are we?)
