    Randomness

~I can't believe that Elvis Costello is doing this. Next year he's going to play at Merlefest (a festival founded by Doc Watson, which Emmylou Harris has frequented, so maybe that's why EC wants to come). That is so unbelieveably close to me, I don't know how I can pass up the opportunity. The radio station called it "taking the festival to another level." That's pretty accurate. They've never had anyone that famous that I can remember.

I thought two EC shows this summer was quite enough for this year.

    ARGH

~The dancing in "Fairytale of New York," best Christmas song ever written, complete with fake snow:

~I feel compelled to point out something about The Pogues.
Meeting them was a huge thrill. And there's a reason for that.

What could I expect from them? Would they be rude to me? Incoherent?

Everyone knows about their rather drunken history. So how are they now? Has whatever AA they're in (I'm not being sarcastic; I've read that) helped? There's no problem with their musical performance--that I already knew. They're extremely talented musicians, which a lot of people don't realize.

But what's more is-- they're all sweethearts, and surprisingly sober. Perfect gentlemen.

Even the few (two, maybe?) of them who showed outward signs of drinking were polite and generous, and not even significantly "out of it". (Yes, I am including the lead singer here.)

And believe me, no one was more surprised than I was.

It's hard to tell what kind of people they are just from watching them perform. Their concerts are such high-energy affairs, you'd never guess how much they've matured. And I mean that in a good way.

I'd feel 100 times safer with The Pogues than I would with 90% of their fans at the concert.

At this point in their career they need to be recognized for doing great songs and performing them like master musicians. Not that most music reviewers will, though, like whoever wrote the review in the "Arkansas Democrat" I just read online. Since the 80s critics all thought they'd self-destruct and they haven't, and they're in no danger of doing it now. So to the music critics, get over it. Just enjoy the show.

Remember when I had a sense of humor?

One of my favorite movies, Sleepy Hollow, was on TV last night. It's a perfect Halloween movie--as is almost anything by Tim Burton. It reminded me of something I posted here once...
    In honor of Halloween, here's a re-post.

Despite the uncontrolled violence/killing/etc., heck, I'd move to Sleepy Hollow. Given the right incentive.

"You...you need to share my bed why?"

"For the last time, this is my bed, and I'm not sharing it with you!"

"I can make my getaway, right?...The girl who keeps bothering me every night isn't looking, is she?"

"Let's see...'To protect a loved one from the Headless Horseman, sleep in their bed with them.' *GASP!* Oh, no!"

"No, you see, I have to go back. She was only trying to save my life.... It's not like you ever tried to do that."

"Here she comes.. (grumble grumble) Well, if it'll save my life...Sure, c'mon in. (grumble...)"

"What do you mean, that book was a fake??"

    Say Goodbye to...

I've been MIA here for a while because of a little trip I took...

My camera got a good workout there.

Lots of other exciting things too... A pleasant surprise considering I dreaded this trip.
Also got a kiss from the man of my dreams... (Ok, so I'd have to have some pretty weird dreams for that to be true...) ...who happens to be in the next photo....

Which photo did I enjoy taking most? I'd never been west before. Never seen a palm tree before. And yet, if you guessed #1 or #2, you'd be wrong.

    Top 5 on Friday

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays so this meme from Music Memoirs should be fun.

Top 5 musical bands/albums/songs that put you in a Halloween mood (you can pick one or all three or whatever makes you happy) :

The Moody Blues - The Other Side of Life
(not overtly scary but you need to see the video)

    Elvis Costello - Spooky Girlfriend

The Pogues - Down in the Ground Where the Dead Men Go
(complete with bloodcurdling screams at the end courtesy of Shane MacGowan, Spider Stacy & Cait O'Riordan)

Danny Elfman - This is Halloween
    (of course)

The Pogues - Sit Down by the Fire
(they get another entry because 1: I love them and 2: they have a million songs about ghosts and death and scary things. This one is about creatures from a children's bedtime story that bite off your head and eat your liver... Maybe this should've gone in Part 2 of this meme....)

    ~Part 2: Top 5 songs that scare you :

    Devo - Peek a Boo
(This song is aggravating and the video features demented clowns. Horrifying.)

    The Pogues - Worms
(if there's any Pogues song I don't like, it's this. Their drummer's demented singing voice, which CAN sound good if he wants it to, along with the demented accordion makes me want to skip this song every time. I really don't need to hear "The worms crawl in and the worms crawl out... Your eyes fall in, etc.")

    The Normal - Warm Leatherette
(freaky song about a car crash that is so repetitive and annoying it makes you want to shoot someone, namely yourself.)

    Herbie Hancock - Rockit
    (both song and video)

Screamin' Jay Hawkins - I Put a Spell on You
(Hate it. Traumatized me as a kid.)

    .
    .
    .

~The aforementioned Pogues song "Sit Down By the Fire" is so perfectly scary I think I'm going to post the words and traumatize anyone who's reading this.

    Sit down by the fire
And I'll tell you a story
To send you away to your bed
Of the things you hear creeping
    When everyone's sleeping
And you wish you were out here instead
It isn't the mice in the wall
It isn't the wind in the well
    But each night they march
Out of that hole in the wall
    Passing through on their way
    Out of hell
They're the things that you see
When you wake up and scream
The cold things that follow you
    Down the Boreen
They live in the small ring of trees on the hill
Up at the top of the field
And they dance on the rain
And they dance on the wind
    They tap on the window
    When no-one is in
And if ever you see them
    Pretend that you're dead
Or they'll bite off your head
    They'll rip out your liver
    And dance on your neck
    They dance on your head
    They dance on your chest
    They give you the cramp
    And the cholic for jest
They're the things that you see
When you wake up and scream
The cold things that follow you
    Down the Boreen
They live in the small ring of trees on the hill
Up at the top of the field
    They play on the wind
    They sing on the rain
    They dance on your eyes
    They dance in your brain
    Remember this place
It is damp and it's cold
    The best place on earth
But it's dark and it's old
    So lie near the wall
    And cover your head
    Good night and God bless,
    Now fuck off to bed.

    (by Shane MacGowan...of course.)

I'm going to the West Coast tomorrow... aka the Big Scary Trip.

But at least I get to see The Pogues, my musical obsession at the moment. That will make it all worth it.

    Wish me luck...

    Christening the Camera Phone

With all the autumn-themed displays cropping up here, I took the chance to try out my new camera phone...

    Not too bad.

People come from miles around to see the leaves where I live... I might as well take photos of them myself.

    Special Top 5 on Friday

Meme by Music Memoirs, topic by ME.
The other day I was noticing how many clever album titles there were out there... and now I get to put my musings to good use. Many thanks to Andrea for using my theme :)

    Top 5 On Friday - Week 93
    Top 5 Album Titles:

    1. Kirsty MacColl - Electric Landlady

I probably don't have to explain that pun!

    2. Nick Lowe - Abominable Showman

Nick is the master of puns in album titles. (But I still think his "Labour of Lust" should've been "Labour of Lowe." Much funnier.)

    3. George Harrison - 33 1/3

Named after not only the 33 1/1 rpm record, but also his age at the time.

    4. The Moody Blues - Every Good Boy Deserves Favour

Named for EGBDF in the treble clef, of course.

    5. The Pogues - Rum, Sodomy & the Lash

From a quote by Winston Churchill on the Royal navy.

Simon & Garfunkel - Wednesday Morning 3 AM

....*I can't come up with a Thursday song*...
Bonus: Duran Duran - New Moon on Monday

The Cure - Friday I'm in Love

Take Me Back Tuesday - Week 91

    From the great Music Memoirs

    It's about musical obsessions:

What was your first musical obsession?
The Beatles. I've pretty much been a fan ever since I was born. I'm not kidding.

Do you have a current musical obsession?
The Pogues. I'm in love with that band right now.
It really snuck up on me. It doesn't make logical sense, but it's making it easier that other artists are disappointing me...

Who was your first musical crush?
I wish I could remember. My first "favorite" member of a band was Peter of the Monkees, but I wouldn't call that a crush.

Did you ever feel let down by an artist/musician/band because of something that they said in the media?
I feel 99% sure that I have, but I can't remember specifics. I'm pretty sure The Moody Blues have done it though.

What attracts you to a particular band or artist?
If hear at least one song by them I really love--usually a catchy single--I'll investigate them further. Like Andrea said, a pretty face doesn't hurt, but I always end up getting "obsessed" with a band/artist that way after I've already gotten obsessed with the music.

    Top 5 On Friday - Week 91

Top 5 song lyrics that best describe you:

    "I was a fine idea at the time...now I'm a brilliant mistake"
    -Elvis Costello, "Brilliant Mistake"

(I can't help it. His lyrics feel very apt so much of the time.)

    "I'm the town cryer/ and everybody knows/ I'm just a little down/ with a lifetime to go"
    -Elvis Costello, "Town Cryer"

"Who knows where the future leads us
The waters are wide, the road is long
I pray for a hand to guide us
And welcome us back where we belong"
    -Justin Hayward, "Who Knows"

    "If you're wondering why
All the love that you long for eludes you
And people are rude and cruel to you
    I'll tell you why
    I'll tell you why
    I'll tell you why
    I'll tell you why
    But you wouldn't believe me...
You just haven't earned it yet baby"
-Kirsty MacColl/ Morissey, "You Just Haven't Earned it Yet Baby."

(I hope that's not why everything always goes wrong, but sometimes I wonder.)

"Please don't let me fear anything I cannot explain
I can't believe, I'll never believe in anything again"
-Elvis Costello, "Couldn't Call it Unexpected no. 4"

(Darn him for affecting me so much with his lyrics. These lyrics are scary enough by themselves but they're made even scarier because they just might be true, and not just for him..)
