New Year's Eve
I'm not particularly looking forward to having dinner tonight, since I don't get along with some of the people that will be there. Well, one person in particular. And after that I get to spend New Year's Eve with my family. Big surprise, I never go to New Year's parties!
Here are some of the things that made this year worthwhile.. and some other things I just threw in there because they give me joy.
Concerts:
Elvis Costello in the spring...
EC in the summer...
The Pogues in the fall...
No photo of mine from the spring concert since all my photos erm.. sucked.
Now for something completely different...
Well, I hope 2007 is as pretty as this year was.

Top 5 on Friday... and Christmas rambling
Music Memoirs asks...
Top 5 albums of 2006:
The Beatles - Love
The Radiators from Space - Trouble Pilgrim
^ This is a fantastic album that everyone should hear. It's a bit 80s but also very contemporary. I love love love it, and I never say that lightly.
Death Cab for Cutie - Plans
Elvis Costello & Allen Toussaint - River in Reverse
Diana Krall - From This Moment On
My answers were a bit pathetic. I only truly "loved" the first 2 albums I mentioned. Most of the music I bought this year wasn't released in 2006.
I wonder why Christmas is a time of year (among many) where my family must argue at least once a day. Doesn't matter what house I'm in or what relatives we're visiting.... You only need a few certain people there to spark a fight. I'm sick of people arguing about how there are too many decorations (which there aren't) or about some broken reindeer or how much of a wanker I am for not finding glue to fix the reindeer.
My playlist at the moment is made up mostly of Christmas music. Mind you I'm sort of an expert on Christmas music, but only when they're songs done by mostly 80's artists!
The Moody Blues - Don't Need a Reindeer Elvis Costello & The Chieftains - St. Stephen's Day Murders Elton John - Step Into Christmas The Pogues - Fairytale of New York XTC - Thanks for Christmas Emerson, Lake & Palmer - I Believe in Father Christmas (I've started liking this one better than the Greg Lake version) Band-aid - Do They Know It's Christmas The Moody Blues - On This Christmas Day Tom Petty - Christmas All Over Again The Pretenders - 2000 Miles
...plus the entire Beatles Christmas boot. It never fails to bring a smile to my face, and at this time of year I tend to need that!
If all else fails I can spend Christmas celebrating the birthday of my cute little Shane MacGowan (no snarky comments please ;) whose bday is the 25th.

Top 5 on Friday
From Music Memoirs this week...
Top 5 musical mishaps (Things that you've done, or artists have done that are a big Whoops!) :
1. Not really my fault, but going to a Moody Blues concert with a person who thought it appropriate to scream "Justin, you da man" before I could explain to them that this man has no sense of humor and probably wanted to kill us for that. I'm certain he heard it too.
2. Accidentally playing Elvis Costello's song "This Town" with my religious friend in the car. The lyrics are as follows: "You're nobody till everybody in this town thinks your'e a bastard." Also not realizing the volume was all the way up when same friend was present, and EC's "The Imposter" came blaring out. My friend, looking at me with disgust: "What IS this?"
3. Getting kissed this autumn by a famous hard-drinking Irish singer, and kissing him back a bit too enthusiastically. (Bonus mishap- I don't regret it either.)
4. Giggling inanely to Pete Thomas of EC's band The Imposters last year when he was signing the only thing I'd brought with me, an 8x10 of Elvis. Pete, seeing the photo: "Ugh!" Which was very funny, but then I giggled something stupid like "Sorry! I don't have an album". Which isn't even true-- of COURSE I have an album, just not with me.
5. Standing too close to the mosh pit (I hate mosh pits) at the Pogues show in the Spring, and getting crushed against the barrier, and ending up so sore the next day it hurt to breathe. Oh yeah, and getting rescued by the security guy was pretty embarassing too (NOT the cute one who chatted with me before the show about the Erasure shows he worked at in Atlantic City).

The Beatles - Good Day Sunshine
The Clash - Rock the Casbah
Elvis Costello - Baby's Got a Brand New Hairdo (I don't know why, but it's so fast and silly it just puts me in a good mood)

My Affair
This Kirsty MacColl song has been in my head for three days straight. It's impossible to get this song out of your head once it's stuck in there, I can tell you. Which is strange since I didn't really find it to be that catchy when I first heard it.
Not even the incredibly annoying events of this week could distract me from listening to the song in my head.
When a tree fell down outside at 3 am, making a godawful noise as it knocked down the power lines (convincing me that the tree had in fact fallen on the house instead, sending me into complete panic), I ended up lying awake in the pitch dark with no heat for most of the remainder of the night-- with "My Affair" blaring away in my head.
It's been a really terrible week, for reasons I won't bore anyone with, but the soundtrack has been this odd little Latin-tinged pop song.
It's my affair Where I go and what I do It's my affair oh yeah It's my affair It's up to me and not to you It's my affair
That's how I want to keep it I kissed the boy in secret Thrilled me to the very core I couldn't stop I wanted more and I didn't hear the door and They caught me on the floor With my affair.
Now I'll go back to sulking about my bad week, and trying to concentrate on things that will cheer me up. Like my strange affection for this man
I know, I'm insane. But as Kirsty would say, It's my affair.... :p

Watch "The Young Ones", 80's BBC show, and wish they'd made more than 12 episodes.
Drool over wonderful King of America cover.
Kidnap Elvis AND Justin Lodgey AND Paul to preserve sanity and ward off post-concert depression.
Pretty much try to stay in a constant state of confusion (like Johnny Depp) just because of the expression it leaves on my face.
Protest War
(feeling a little ambitious, are we?)
