    Take Me Back Tuesday

    From Music Memoirs

~ What was the first musical movie you saw (not necessarily broadway related)
    Probably The Beatles' "Help!"
As a little kid I so badly wanted a bed in the floor that you could step down into, like John's.

~ What was the most recent musical movie you saw?
"That Thing You Do," which I've already seen a million times, but it never really gets old for me.

~ Have you ever seen a movie because of the music that was in it?
"De-Lovely," if that counts. I like the Cole Porter songs, although my actual reason for seeing it was Elvis Costello...

~ What is your favorite musical (Movie and Broadway show if you have one)
My favorite Broadway show was "The Boy From Oz", and not just because Hugh Jackman was cute (I was so far away I couldn't even see his face!)

    I punched a guy

    ...on St. Patrick's Day.

Ok, it wasn't a very hard blow and it was on the guy's back, but I had to do something or he was going to crush me against the wall and quite likely break my ribs. This obviously drunk guy also had some rather serious hygiene issues and is not the kind of person you want leaning on you.

This was a concert, of course. And without fail, no matter how big the concert, airport, line in a store, etc. is, I will get stuck next to the crazy person, the obnoxious person, or in this case, The Drunkest Guy in the Place. (Excluding the man dressed as Santa Claus, who got thrown out for fighting.)

Concert #1: Perfect. No one really bothered me.
Concert #2: Drunk guy pushing me, making me gag with his disgustingness (is that a word?) and yelling at me when I tried to extricate myself to stop myself from getting severely injured.

These were The Pogues concerts, by the way. The shows themselves rocked.... This is pretty much the most professional, tightest band I've ever seen (which may or may not come as a surprise to most people who've only heard about this band in passing). The first concert blew me away, even though Shaney Mac tore some ligaments in his knee a few days earlier and had to sing from a wheelchair. That man is indestructible and he sounded fantastic.

The second one seemed great too, but I was too busy punching that wanker to really enjoy it.

    Top 5 on Friday

This week's Music Memoirs meme is:

Top 5 musical things (songs, albums, bands..whatever) that put you in the St Patrick's Day mood.

That question is certainly going to open the floodgates, since as I type this I'm sitting in a hotel getting ready to go see the Pogues on St. Patrick's Day.

I think I'll do all Pogues songs for this one. (Andrea knows me too well :) )

The Pogues & The Dubliners - The Irish Rover
(the Pogues plus the classic Irish band)

The Pogues - The Boys from the County Hell
("Lend me ten pounds and I'll buy you a drink"-- there's your obligatory drinking song)

Shane MacGowan & Maire Brennan - You're the One
(A very Irish combination, the Pogues' lead singer plus the woman from Clannad)

The Pogues - The Sickbed of Cuchulainn
(They even write new drinking songs about old mythical Irish characters.)

The Pogues & Kirsty MacColl - Fairytale of New York
(A Christmas song and a St. Patrick's Day song rolled into one.)

    Top 5 Meme

It's sooo late. Yet another busy weekend!

    1) I hate daylight savings time.
    2) My email won't open. How sad is that?
    3) I need to start packing for a little mini concert trip thing.
    4) I've spent 3 days straight trying to get the DVD burner in the new computer to work. As they say, third time lucky! I threw out 2 ruined discs but now I'm happy. (About 6 total ruined discs if you count the times I've tried to burn one on a borrowed computer)
5)I have weird guilt/jealousy problems when one of my darling celebrities/musicians gets married.

Ok. Now the meme from Music Memoirs:

Top 5 songs/albums or bands to listen to when working out.

I don't love working out. Not by a long shot. So music is very important to me when I do it.

The Moody Blues - Lovely to See You
(always a workout fave of mine)

    The Moody Blues - Question

    Elvis Costello - 20% Amnesia

    Kajagoogoo - Too Shy

Q Feel - Dancing in Heaven (Orbital Bebop)
(Bad 80s stuff rocks when you're working out and have to keep moving!)

edit: Just realized today is my anniversary of meeting Elvis Costello for the first time, on a freezing night in Knoxville. I can't believe it's been, what, 2 years?

Being Really Serious for a Moment...

All I seem to do on here lately is complain. But there seem to be so many sad things going on. I thought the weekend trip to the ER was bad, but the next weekend was even worse.
It was foggy and as a result a dog was hit on the road. I wasn't driving, thank god, but I was in the car. I don't think it's an exaggeration to say this is one of the worst things I've ever experienced.

Most people who know me know that I love animals, almost to a fault. I've adopted a great many over the years, and I currently own more cats than is really sensible. So this was truly horrendous. It wasn't just a tiny car accident either; it was fairly serious. And enough animals have been lost this year. Very recently a good friend of mine lost her kitty to old age, and I'd known that cat since he was a kitten. I looked after him and fed him when my friend was out of town. Even worse, really, an internet friend of mine lost two kitties very recently, which sounded heartbreaking (you know who you are...)

    Sometimes nothing seems fair.

    Top 5 on Friday

    From Music Memoirs

Top 5 "Ranting" songs (interpret as you see fit) :

Elvis Costello & the Attractions - I Hope You're Happy Now
(Oddly one of my first "favorite" EC songs.
"I knew then what I know now. I never loved you anyhow
And I hope you're happy now
    ")

    Billy Joel - My Life
(I've wanted to recite this chorus many times:
"I don't care what you say anymore, this is my life
Go ahead with your own life and leave me alone")

The Clash - Know Your Rights
("You have the right to free speech
As long as you're not dumb enough to actually try it. ")

    Kirsty MacColl - Innocence
("It would take a gunshot just to clear your head awhile
And after all this time how can you stand there,

    Look at me, and smile?")

The Beatles - Run For Your Life
("You better run for your life if you can, little girl
Hide your head in the sand little girl
    Catch you with another man
    That's the end little girl
    ")

  • Pretty much try to stay in a constant state of confusion (like Johnny Depp) just because of the expression it leaves on my face.
  • Protest War (feeling a little ambitious, are we?)
