    Steve Nieve Tomorrow

Tomorrow, Steve Nieve (the keyboardist with Elvis Costello's Attractions, and now the Imposters) is going to be playing a show near me. In Charlotte. What is it with these guys and Charlotte? I personally have a love/hate relationship with the city. It's a big city, practically the crime capital of the state, and it's a complete maze. Before the days of mapquest, it was impossible to get around in. I don't like to go there, but that's where most bands go to play concerts.

Elvis played there 2 years ago, and the venue was crap. It was a basketball gym for some college. I remember the sign out front "Tonight: ELVIS COSTELLO! Tomorrow: LACROSSE TEAM!" Ugh.

The crowd was obnoxious, and I thought he'd never come back again (he even joked about the city when he played Nashville the next nite-- I have the live recording and he says things like, "I have a cold.. I think I picked something up in Charlotte!"). I really thought he'd never come back. Well, he did. And he's coming in about 2 weeks to do another show, and I think I'm going to go.

Tomorrow, however, is just Steve. Steve solo. Now, he's a genius keyboard player, I'll give him that. He's a good backup performer for EC. But how would he be as a solo performer? (And the real question is, is he going to hang around in awful Charlotte for two weeks until Elvis arrives and joins him?)

Since going out of town to shop or to see concerts is the only thing that makes my life less monotonous, I might go. It's on a Saturday, so I don't have much to lose.
This is going to be interesting.

    Top 5 on Friday

    A Music Memoirs meme!
(With 3 Elvis answers, because Andrea's right, he does do the most clever opening lines)

Top 5 best opening lines in rock music:

The Pogues - Fairytale of New York
    It was Christmas Eve, babe
    In the drunk tank...

The Clash - This is Radio Clash
    Interrupting all programmes...
This is radio clash on pirate satellite
Orbiting your living room, cashing in the bill of rights
Cuban army surplus or refusing all third lights
This is radio clash on pirate satellite

    Elvis Costello - New Amsterdam
You're sending me tulips mistaken for lilies
You give me your lip after punching me silly

Elvis Costello - The Angels Wanna Wear My Red Shoes
Oh I used to be disgusted
and now I try to be amused.

Elvis Costello - All This Useless Beauty
It's at times such as this
    she'd be tempted to spit
    If she wasn't so ladylike.

    Bonus song:
Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros - Bhindi Bhagee
(a really funny song, "mostly about food," as he put it)
Well I was walking down the highroad
    And this guy stops me
He'd just got in from New Zealand
And he was looking for mushy peas

    Music of Today
(not quite another rant... I promise)

With my cable package, I get MTV and Vh1 although I have no reason to ever watch them. I only ever watch Vh1 Classic, and now it's become awful most of the time anyway. They have a "category" for the music I like, and they call it Alternative. As Elvis Costello would (and did) ask, alternative to what? To crap, most likely.

I had it on the other night, and it was that category, and I got to see Elvis, the Cure, and one of Paul Weller's bands, with Paul Weller looking very cute and very English. (Suddenly I'm finding him very attractive, but only with long hair, but that's really off topic)

The rest of the time, they play all metal bands, some movie only marginally related to music, or a 2-hour long documentary about a band I don't care about.

The only reason I see what's going on on the various MTVs is if I channel surf. On MTV2 (or 3 or 4 or 5, whichever) just now, they had Badly Drawn Boy. I am so sick of these whiny-voiced little white boys who play generic, boring music. All those bands sound exactly the same. They're either imitators of U2 (in the Coldplay vein) or they sound like Modest Mouse, Badly Drawn Boy, Fall Out Boy, etc.

I'm not being narrow-minded, though. I have a Death Cab for Cutie CD which I'm trying to like ("trying" being the operative word here) and I've kind of liked Fountains of Wayne, Josh Rouse, and the Kaiser Chiefs, and some others. And I just got that new CD by Amy Macdonald, which I mentioned some posts back.

    There it is:

And here is Paul Weller (and some other guy in the background), who looks really bad with hair any shorter than this

Ok. I just had to get all that out of my system.

Take Me Back Tuesday - Week 138

You are in charge of the music for the Labor Day Picnic, what tunes do you bring along that will keep everyone happy.
If it's a family occasion? Hmm. I did something similar to that once-- one Thanksgiving I had Justin Hayward's "Moving Mountains" on in the background, and no one complained, though that was years ago.

Now I might want to put on Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros, because it's laid-back and nice to listen to, and it's kind of world music-y.

[Edit: rant alert.] (And a certain family member has really gotten into it because of me [I feel guilty saying who in case she'd be angry, not that she's be reading this]. The certain family member now pretends to be a bigger Strummer fan than me, even though were it not for me she never would have given him a listen. I have nothing that's all to myself; this and other certain family members were even there for a certain important celebrity meeting, so I can't even have that all to myself.)

Am I a horrible person for going off on a rant like that?

Labor Day means the beginning of a rush of new CDs that the recording industry hopes will make it into your homes now or for Christmas. What ones are you looking forward to?
Maybe the Best Of Diana Krall. I don't really know of anything else I'd be interested in, at the moment.

What song best sums up the Summer of 2007
I could pick something snarky to sum up my weird, tiring summer, but...
Paul McCartney - Ever Present Past

I got the new album at the beginning of summer. I had it with me all throughout England and even heard it, and Dance Tonight, playing in various places this summer.

    Mr. Rock & Roll

I went on a shopping spree today. One reason was to have some fun with a friend, and another reason was to get out of the house because of the fleas. (I won't bore you with more flea details, except that I can't sit on the couch without them jumping on me.)

I don't want to go to bed, mostly because I'll be terrorized by fleas, so I'm eating cookies from England and playing around on the computer. So I thought I'd type about some music I'm listening to now.

There aren't many female vocalists that I really like. A couple of the ones I particularly like are Diana Krall, Kirsty MacColl, etc... So it's interesting that I heard a song today that I really like, and it's by someone named Amy Macdonald.

Apparently she's a Scottish singer, and she's very young (I'm not sure of her age) but you'd never know it from her voice. That's probably one reason I took a liking to this song-- I tend to favor female vocalists who sing in a lower range.

This is the song: Mr. Rock & Roll.

    I'm intrigued.
Here's a piece on Amazon about her. I haven't really read it yet but I thought I'd post the link anyway.

    Top 5 on Friday

    From Music Memoirs

I can't believe how late it is but I want to do this meme on time! (Well, semi on time.)

Top 5 "earworms" that you actually like getting stuck in your head.

The Monkees - I'll Be Back Up On My Feet
(even with that line "when I find my boots I know I gotta go," which always struck me as fairly ridiculous. I remember having this song stuck in my head, keeping me company on a long New York City cab ride.)

Elvis Costello - 13 Steps Lead Down
("She stands and fails on fashion fingernails
Her lovers have her walking 'round on instruments of torture!")

The Moody Blues - Don't Need a Reindeer

Simple Minds - Don't You Forget About Me

The theme song from Craig Ferguson's "Late Late Show."
It's short and always reminds me of a slightly corny BBC sitcom theme, or something. And it's sung by Craig Ferguson.

    Post-Birthday Posting

I'm trying to really enjoy all my-bday gifts--I've been stretching out the fun for the past 2 weeks, really. I kind of need something to cheer me up between the fleas, by new bad haircut, and all the crap I'm supposed to be doing right now. Problem is, it's kind of hard to wear new jackets (I got a few nice jackets for my b-day) when your arms are covered in itch medicine. It's kind of hard to venture out in public when, due to bug bites and bad hair, you feel kinda hideous.

On the Flea Front (which I've been rambling about on the LJ), I have some electronic flea traps now, some more spray, and an electric flea comb for the kitties. I guess they must be helping, at least a tiny bit, but I'm still getting flea bites. I can't even count them, there are now so many. Because of this, on the hottest days of the summer (although I think the heat wave may be slacking off now), I couldn't wear shorts. Still can't. I don't actually wear them much in the first place--I've been known to wear long pants in extreme heat-- but it still would've been nice then. Last week it was about the hottest it's ever been here.

I feel guilty complaining when I read about other people's problems, ones that are worse than mine. A member of a band I like, for example, is undergoing horrible treatment for an illness and just posted a message about it. It was extremely hard to read. How can I let myself be miserable when other people are so much more miserable?

    Music Memoirs memes

Doing both the Take Me Back Tuesday and the Top 5 on Friday.

Take Me Back Tuesday - Week 134

Are there any bands that you like now that you didn't like when you first heard them?

Nick Cave. Maybe I'm bending the truth here, because his voice kinda disturbs me on a lot of songs. I've been trying to like him though. I saw him perform 1 song live in London recently, too.

What bands that don't record anymore do you miss the most?
Let's see-- in a word, the Moody Blues. I'm not getting my hopes up for a new album, and hate for their last effort to be the Christmas album, even though I enjoyed it. I miss solo records by Justin Hayward and John Lodge too.

Did you ever buy an album by an artist you didn't necessarily like but because everyone else had a copy, you had to as well. If so, what was it.
I did that very recently. I got that Modest Mouse record, "We were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank," because people are buying it and because Johnny Marr just joined them, and I like Johnny Marr. Unfortunately, the record is unlistenable. The singer has no talent whatsoever.

    Top 5 on Friday:

Top 5 musical acts you would travel more than a hundred miles to see.

Ok, these are mostly going to be musical acts that I HAVE travelled more than 100 miles to see.

Ones I've gone 100 miles to see:
    Elvis Costello
    Paul McCartney
    The Pogues

Ones that I would if I had the chance:
    Mick Jones (of the Clash)
    Nick Lowe
